Notably, Japan skipped most of the darker, more cynical Nickelodeon-era episodes and focused on the slightly polished Disney-era version, believing it had more universal appeal.
Doug’s blue-skinned, sound-effect-making best friend Skeeter was voiced by Fred Newman in the US. Newman’s performance relied heavily on vocal percussion and scatting. In a fascinating piece of casting, the everyday, anxious teenager Doug Funnie was voiced by Chafurin, an actor best known to anime fans as the booming Inspector Megure in Detective Conan (Case Closed) and the elderly, eccentric Tomozou Sakura in Chibi Maruko-chan .
