Meta00s is practiced largely by Gen Z and younger digital creators who may not even remember the decade. It is "meta" because it treats the year 2000 through 2009 as a toolbox of symbols rather than a historical era. It is a self-aware, ironic, and highly stylized collage. It combines the physical artifacts of the era (flip phones, low-rise jeans) with the digital artifacts of the early internet (MySpace layouts, Windows XP error sounds, pixel art) to create a surrealist, dreamlike version of the past that never truly existed.
